Home garden shelves are non-GMO by default
If you walk into a garden center or open a home seed catalog, the seeds you see are almost always non-GMO. Home garden seed companies generally state this right on the packet or in the catalog. I have not seen a GMO seed packet for sale on a home garden rack. Tomatoes, peppers, beans, lettuce, herbs, cucumbers, melons, and most sweet corn varieties for home gardeners are available as non-GMO seed without much effort.
That does not mean every home garden seed is organic. Non-GMO and organic are different labels. A seed can be non-GMO and still come from a plant grown with synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Organic seed adds another layer: the parent plants were grown under organic certification rules, and the seed itself was produced without prohibited inputs. Both are non-GMO, but organic is a narrower category.
GMO seed lives in a separate farm supply chain
GMO seed is rare at the home garden level and common at the commercial farm level for a short list of crops. In the United States, the crops with widely available GMO seed include field corn, soybeans, cotton, canola, sugar beets, and alfalfa. Some GMO summer squash, papaya, potato, and apple varieties exist, but they are not the crops a backyard gardener is likely to find as seed packets. Farmers buy GMO seed from authorized seed dealers, not from the rack at a hardware store.
A farmer purchasing GMO seed signs a technology agreement. That agreement covers how the seed can be used, whether the farmer can save seed for the next season, and what the farmer is allowed to do with the harvest. The seed company owns the patented genetic trait. This licensing system is a big reason GMO seed is distributed through dealers and not through general seed catalogs.
Non-GMO seed for farmers takes more planning
For home gardeners, non-GMO seed is the default. For farmers growing commodity crops, non-GMO seed can be less visible. If a farmer wants non-GMO field corn or non-GMO soybean seed, the local farm supply store may carry only a few options or none at all. Independent seed companies, seed saver exchanges, and some farm cooperatives carry non-GMO varieties, but a farmer may need to order earlier or search farther.
Organic farmers face a similar pattern. Organic certification rules prohibit GMO seed, so organic growers use non-GMO seed or save their own. The non-GMO seed they need is available, but the number of varieties adapted to their region and soil may be smaller than the number of GMO options in a commercial seed catalog.
Why the difference exists
Non-GMO seed comes from traditional plant breeding: cross-pollination, selection, and seed saving over many seasons. Many public universities, small seed companies, and farmer cooperatives breed and sell these seeds without a single owner controlling the entire supply.
GMO seed starts with a lab modification, often adding a trait like insect resistance or herbicide tolerance. Developing, testing, and registering a GMO trait costs seed companies a lot of money. Patents protect that investment. Because the trait is intellectual property, the seed is sold through controlled channels. That is why GMO seed shows up in farm dealer catalogs for a few high-acreage crops and not in a home gardener's envelope.
Availability depends on the crop
Some crops are easy to find as non-GMO seed. Others are not. The split matters when you are choosing what to grow or what to look for on a food label.

This split explains a puzzle I used to have. When I saw non-GMO on a bag of tortilla chips, the corn was likely grown from non-GMO seed that a food company specifically contracted for. When I saw no label on a bottle of vegetable oil, the oil might have come from GMO corn, soy, or canola unless the product was certified organic or carried a third-party non-GMO verification. The seed availability story flows through to the grocery aisle.
What I look for when I buy seed or food
For our garden, I order non-GMO seed from seed catalogs and local nurseries. It is not hard to find. For the pantry, I check for a non-GMO label or an organic label.
