Yes, they exist. I used to assume ketchup was ketchup and mayonnaise was mayonnaise. Then I started flipping jars over and reading the ingredient lists. Non-GMO versions are not rare, but they are not always obvious from the front label. You can find them in most regular grocery stores if you know which ingredients to check.
What "non-GMO" means on a condiment label
For condiments, genetically engineered ingredients usually come from a small group of crops. Corn, soybeans, canola, and sugar beets are the big ones. USDA data shows genetically engineered varieties account for the majority of corn and soybean acres planted in the United States each year. When a ketchup or mayonnaise is labeled non-GMO, the manufacturer is saying those risk crops were not used, or the ingredients met a non-GMO verification standard that requires testing and segregation.
Two labels make this easier. The USDA organic seal means the product cannot contain genetically engineered ingredients under federal organic regulations. A third-party non-GMO seal means the product has been evaluated for GMO avoidance, but it is not the same as organic. A non-GMO product can still contain conventional pesticides or synthetic additives. I keep both labels in mind, but for condiments I usually look for organic first because it covers both GMO avoidance and some other ingredients I prefer to skip.
Since January 1, 2022, most packaged foods sold in the US that contain detectable bioengineered ingredients must carry a disclosure. The disclosure might say "bioengineered food" or "contains a bioengineered food ingredient" on the package. It might also be a QR code you scan. This rule has a gap worth knowing. Highly refined ingredients like corn syrup or soybean oil often have no detectable modified DNA left after processing, so they may not trigger a disclosure even if they came from GMO crops. That is why a missing disclosure is not the same as a non-GMO product.
Ketchup labels
Ketchup looks simple but the sweetener matters. Conventional ketchup often lists high fructose corn syrup or corn syrup. Those sweeteners come from the corn supply, and most corn grown in the US is genetically engineered. Some ketchups use sugar, which can mean beet sugar. Most sugar beets grown in the US are also genetically engineered. If the ingredient list reads "sugar" on a conventional bottle, you cannot tell whether it came from cane or beets unless the label names cane sugar or carries a non-GMO or organic seal.
Tomatoes are not a widely planted GMO crop in the US, so the tomato paste in ketchup is usually not the issue. Vinegar, natural flavors, and spices can be derived from GMO corn, but refined vinegar often loses detectable DNA. For our family, the fastest ketchup filter is simple. I buy organic ketchup or one with a non-GMO seal and an ingredient list that names cane sugar, honey, or another sweetener I recognize. I skip bottles with high fructose corn syrup.
Mayonnaise labels
Mayonnaise is mostly oil, so the oil is the first thing I check. Conventional mayonnaise often uses soybean oil. Most soybeans grown in the US are genetically engineered. A non-GMO mayonnaise might use avocado oil, olive oil, or non-GMO expeller-pressed canola oil. Canola is another major GMO crop in the United States, so I look for the words non-GMO or organic if the label says canola.
The eggs in mayonnaise are not genetically engineered. But conventional hens often eat feed made from GMO corn and soy. Organic standards require organic feed, which means non-GMO feed, so an organic mayonnaise also addresses the feed chain. Some non-GMO mayonnaise brands use conventional eggs but specify non-GMO ingredients in the oil and vinegar only. If the egg feed source matters to you, read that line, but for most families the oil swap removes the main GMO ingredient.
Vinegar and lemon juice are minor players in mayonnaise. Distilled vinegar made from GMO corn often contains no detectable modified DNA, so it does not need a bioengineered disclosure. Some people still prefer vinegar made from non-GMO sources. I do not treat that as a dealbreaker if the oil and eggs are already clean.
Other condiments worth a quick label check
Mustard seeds are not a major GMO crop, so plain yellow mustard is often the easiest condiment to buy. The trouble starts when a mustard adds soybean oil or sugar. Sweet pickle relish often lists high fructose corn syrup or corn syrup. Barbecue sauce can pack high fructose corn syrup, soybean oil, and a long natural flavors line. Creamy salad dressings usually use soybean oil and sugar, so I check those the same way I check mayonnaise.
- Mustard: look for vinegar, mustard seed, turmeric, and spices only.
- Relish: look for cucumbers, vinegar, and cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup.
- Barbecue sauce: look for cane sugar, molasses, or honey and an oil you recognize.
- Salad dressing: check the first oil ingredient and the sweetener.
Citric acid is another one to know. It is often made from corn, and most conventional corn is genetically engineered. But highly purified citric acid often contains no detectable modified DNA, so it may not trigger a bioengineered disclosure. If you want to avoid GMO corn entirely, look for an organic or non-GMO version.
How I read a label in the store
I flip the bottle and read the ingredient list before the front label. Front-of-package phrases such as natural or made with real ingredients do not tell me whether a condiment is non-GMO. The ingredient list and the organic or non-GMO seal do. If I see high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, soybean oil, canola oil, or sugar listed alone on a conventional product, I assume GMO ingredients unless the label states otherwise.
I separate two questions. A product can be non-GMO and still contain added sugar or preservatives. I look for both the non-GMO or organic seal and a short ingredient list. That two-step filter keeps me from swapping one label confusion for another.
Simple swaps for a non-GMO fridge
I keep a few bottles in rotation. An organic ketchup with cane sugar, a mayonnaise made with avocado oil, a yellow mustard with vinegar and spices only, and a barbecue sauce that lists cane sugar or molasses instead of high fructose corn syrup. The taste difference in our house has been zero. These are not specialty-store luxuries anymore. The regular grocery store down the street carries house-brand organic ketchup and non-GMO mayonnaise at prices close to the conventional bottles.
When I cook at home, I apply the same label-reading habit to seasonings and soup mixes.
