Kolbie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes right before her 6th-grade year. It was her last year of Elementary school. To plan for the school year, we prepped plastic containers full of low snacks, extra supplies, and insulin. She only had one teacher, so that she could keep all of her stuff in the classroom with her.
Before school started, we went to her teacher and taught him about her new diagnosis. He was so sweet and supportive of Kolbie and always made sure she was okay during class.
The following year we took a giant leap into Junior High, which was scary for me. I wasn't ready for her to have eight different teachers, and I worried about how her supplies would work. On back-to-school night I went into the office and talked to them about Kolbie and her diagnosis. Below is the plan that we came up with:
Moving from Elementary to Junior High was a giant leap, BUT Kolbie of course handled it like a rockstar! She is so independent and brave. As a parent, it was for sure a lot harder on me than it was on her.
