Reading Past the Non-GMO Sign at the Farmers Market

The last time I stood at a farmers market table with a dozen ears of sweet corn and a paper sack of green beans, the vendor had taped a hand-lettered sign to the front of the table: "Non-GMO." I carried the bag to my car, set it in the trunk, and then wondered how that sign ended up next to the cash box. The sign is newer than the farm. The question behind it is much older.

I'm not a scientist, and I don't have a farm. I read a lot for our family, mostly history and agriculture reporting, not medical journals. What I found changed what I ask at the market. A non-GMO label didn't start on a farm. It started in a supply chain. When I traced the timeline, I stopped asking "Is this non-GMO?" and started asking better questions.

A Label's Short History

The first genetically engineered whole food approved for sale in the United States received FDA clearance in 1994. It was a tomato, and it stayed on shelves only a short time. Two years later, in 1996, herbicide-tolerant soybeans and insect-resistant corn spread through American row crop acreage. Those crops went into animal feed, oils, sweeteners, and processed ingredients, and the grocery shelf changed before most shoppers noticed.

A consumer-facing non-GMO certification label didn't exist until 2007, when a group of natural food retailers in California started a third-party verification program because shoppers wanted a way to identify products that didn't contain bioengineered ingredients. The label came about as a response to industrial agriculture. It wasn't a tradition handed down by previous generations of growers.

Two Systems Grew Up Side by Side

The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service started its National Farmers Market Directory in 1994 with 1,755 markets, and by 2019 the directory counted 8,687 markets while biotech row crops entered the commodity stream. Farmers markets were already expanding during that same stretch. Direct sales stayed at the edge of the larger commodity system, which is exactly why the non-GMO sign became useful marketing.

The part I had to sort out came from a federal list. The USDA list of bioengineered whole foods is short:

  • Certain papaya from Hawaii
  • A few varieties of summer squash
  • Sweet corn
  • A couple of apple varieties
  • A couple of potato varieties

If I'm buying a tomato at a farmers market in Utah, that tomato wasn't bioengineered. No genetically engineered tomato is sold whole in U.S. stores or markets right now. The sign tells me the vendor knows what shoppers are worried about. It doesn't tell me whether the farm saved its own seed, bought from a regional seed house, or ordered from the same catalog as a conventional grower.

What the Seed Catalog Adds

Before hybrid seed corn arrived in the 1930s, farmers could save seed from one year to the next, and open-pollinated varieties reproduced roughly true to type while seed catalogs listed varieties by name with notes about days to maturity, ear size, and drought tolerance. A farmer could pick a variety, grow it, and keep a portion of the seed.

Hybrid corn changed that. Hybrids are not genetically engineered. They are made by crossing two inbred parent lines, a technique that started in the early 1900s. The offspring often grows more uniformly and yields well, but saved seed from a hybrid doesn't reproduce the same plant the next year. Farmers began buying new seed each season. Hybrid seed companies grew. Seed catalogs changed from a library of varieties a farmer could maintain to a purchase list.

Genetically engineered seed is a separate technique again. It alters DNA in a way that doesn't occur through ordinary cross-pollination. A non-GMO label means the seed was not genetically engineered. It says nothing about whether the variety is an heirloom, an open-pollinated standby, or a modern hybrid. I used to assume a non-GMO melon came from a local seed story. It can easily come from a hybrid ordered from a national catalog.

Two Questions I Ask at the Stand

I keep a single printed page in my bag with the USDA's list of bioengineered foods and a few blank lines for notes. At a produce stand, I ask two questions:

  1. What variety is this?
  2. Where did the seed come from?

A vendor who can name the variety usually knows its seed source. I listen for regional seed companies, saved seed, or certified organic seed, because USDA organic standards prohibit genetically engineered seed. If the vendor says organic, the non-GMO part is already covered.

I don't ask these questions to quiz anyone. I ask because a direct-market farmer can respond to what customers request. If enough shoppers ask where seed comes from, the vendor has a reason to note the seed source on the sign next summer. If enough shoppers only glance at a non-GMO sticker, the sticker stays and the seed catalog stays closed.

From Market Basket to Pantry Shelf

Supporting non-GMO farmers markets doesn't require a seed catalog library or a chemistry degree. It takes one printed list, two questions, and the willingness to buy the variety that gets named out loud. That is a small act with a longer history than the sign suggests.
