Short answer: yes. I am not a doctor or dietitian. I am a parent who reads labels, standards, and ingredient lists. This is what I have learned about non-GMO dairy.
Dairy cows are not genetically modified
No dairy cow sold for milk in the United States is a GMO animal. The milk a cow produces is not a GMO food. What can involve GMOs is the feed. Most conventional dairy cows eat corn and soy that have been genetically modified. That feed does not turn the milk into a GMO, but it means the production system depends on GMO crops. For a lot of families, including mine, that is enough reason to look for milk and cheese made without GMO feed.
A hormone called recombinant bovine somatotropin, often shortened to rBST or rBGH, is a second factor. It is a genetically engineered hormone some conventional dairy farms use to increase milk production. Organic standards prohibit it. You will also see milk cartons labeled "from cows not treated with rBST," which addresses that one input but does not tell you anything about the feed. Federal food regulators have said milk from rBST-treated cows is not meaningfully different from milk from untreated cows. I still choose rBST-free milk because the choice is available and it fits what I feel comfortable feeding my kids. That is a personal call.
What the labels actually tell you
The organic seal
For milk, the most direct non-GMO signal is the organic seal you see on cartons. Organic dairy cows must eat organic feed, which excludes genetically engineered grains. They must also have access to pasture during the grazing season. Organic certification prohibits routine antibiotic use, which a non-GMO label does not address. When I want dairy that avoids GMO feed and gives me extra production standards, I buy organic milk.
The third-party non-GMO verification seal
The other label I check is a third-party non-GMO verification seal. That verification focuses only on GMO avoidance. For dairy, it means the cows' feed and any added ingredients have been traced and tested to avoid GMOs. It does not require pasture access and it does not prohibit antibiotics. It is a narrower label. Both labels have value. I do not treat them as the same thing.

Cheese adds a few more layers
The rennet detail most labels hide
Milk is the base, but cheese involves cultures, enzymes, and sometimes colorings or anti-caking agents. The enzyme that coagulates milk is rennet. Traditional rennet comes from the stomach of a calf. In conventional cheese today, the rennet is a version made by genetically engineered microbes, and because that enzyme is a processing aid rather than an ingredient, the final cheese does not have to carry a GMO label even when the rennet came from genetically engineered microbes. That enzyme is called fermentation-produced chymosin. If you want to avoid that processing aid, look for cheese that is organic or carries a non-GMO verification seal. Organic cheese cannot use GMO-derived rennet or other GMO processing aids. Non-GMO verified cheese also excludes GMO-derived enzymes.
Flavored dairy and processed cheese slices bring in more ingredients. Modified food starch, corn syrup, soy lecithin, and citric acid are common GMO-derived ingredients. Those are the ingredients that make a non-GMO label worth reading on yogurt, cream cheese, and shredded cheese blends. Many shredded cheese products include potato starch or cellulose to prevent clumping, and those are GMO-derived unless the package says non-GMO or organic. Block cheese is simpler. You can grate it yourself and skip the anti-caking step.
How I shop for non-GMO dairy
For plain milk, I buy organic or rBST-free plus non-GMO verified when I want that specific feed claim. For yogurt, I read the ingredient list. Many flavored yogurts include added sweeteners and thickeners, so I check the seal or buy plain and add fruit at home. For cheese, I buy blocks and shred them myself. When I buy pre-shredded, I look for the non-GMO verification or organic label. For cream cheese and sour cream, I check the ingredient list for starches and gums. Organic versions have shorter ingredient lists.
I keep this practical. The goal is to know what the labels tell me so I can decide in the dairy aisle without standing there for ten minutes. I used to think non-GMO dairy meant the cow was somehow different. Now I know it means the feed, the added ingredients, and the processing aids were chosen to avoid GMOs. That knowledge changed how I read labels.
When dairy is not an option
If dairy is not an option in your house because of an allergy or intolerance, that changes the question.
